Not all gyms are created equal. Big box gyms. Pilates gyms. CrossFit gyms. Group training gyms. Powerlifting gyms. Personal training gyms. Boutique gyms. Each and every one services a specific clientele. Each has their pros and cons.
Sandbox is an entirely different kind of gym. We’re a bit of everything and something more. We are a boutique personal training gym that focuses on strength training, mobility, athleticism and therapy.
All of the above gyms mentioned, and many others not, have their benefits; however, we want to show why we are a cut above the big guys. Why you should pick Sandbox over Big Box.
Our uniquely tailored, one-on-one approach
Hundreds of people walk through the front doors of any given big box gym in a day. Each personal trainer or group coach can work with a dozen clients or more. Creating individualized programs for all would take huge amounts of time. Some one-on-one trainers are probably successful in tailoring programs for their clients, but group fitness instructors don’t have the capacity. It’s also not what they do.
The purpose of a group class or program is to foster drive and competition. The programs they run aren’t specific to one person. That means they might work to varying degrees for everyone but likely won’t get you where you want to be. They will also likely take a bit longer. And in the end, have you learned why you’re doing certain exercises? Have you learned the benefits of particular lifts? Have you really learned how to execute a lift with good form? Or have you just moved quickly through them to build a sweat and get your heartrate up? Likely the latter.
That’s why we don’t run classes at Sandbox.
We ensure that every program we work on with our clients is tailored to their specific goals and limitations. Each client coming in is assessed using specific exercises, muscle testing and fascial stretching to determine exactly where they are. We never guess. We meet people where they are and never where we think they might or should be. Additionally, we keep testing throughout their entire journey with us.
There are no cookie cutter programs. Every exercise, drill, stretch and nutrition plan is specifically curated for the client in front of us.
We don’t just want you to crush your goals. We also want you to learn. Learn what’s right for you, what’s right for your goals and what’s right for future you. So we take the time to go through all your programming to show you how it fits.
Our deeply held belief that manual therapy belongs on the gym floor
Some big box gyms will have an onsite Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) or Chiropractor. Though they are usually stuffed in a separate room away from the training floor.
At Sandbox you’ll find our therapy tables right on the gym floor. Being able to take a client from an exercise to the table provides invaluable feedback. It allows us to deal with movement restrictions right then, which allows clients to get more out of their workout.
Additionally, all of our trainers are accredited manual therapists. We see each body for what it is: a compilation of restrictions, imbalances and compensations. We know that no two bodies are the same. We’re trained to tackle each as it comes.
Our curiosity and growth mindset
Now, we can’t speak to the mindset of big box gyms here.
We can only tell you how we operate.
At Sandbox, our goal is to approach every interaction with curiosity. We see things as an ongoing set of experiments. If something doesn’t work, it isn’t a failure. It’s an opportunity to gather data and try something new.
Not only are we driven to grow in our knowledge, skills and understanding of basic bodily mechanics, but we want to pass all of that on to our clients too.

Our size
Big box gyms are often just that—big. They’re also often crowded, cluttered and filled with confusing and unnecessary machinery. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos.
Sandbox takes pride in its size.
We’re small, but well equipped. Our promise is that there are never more than 4 trainers on the gym floor at a time. Each client having the space to do what needs to get done is paramount. No one wants to be stepped on or tripped over while working out. It’s annoying. If you wanted to work out with people in your personal space, you’d likely have just stayed at home with the kids or pets.
Lastly, our trainers
Big box gyms see high rates of trainer turnover. Many trainers that work for a big box don’t come in with a background in health and wellness. Many taking the job think it will be glamorous and quick to pay. Although, that’s definitely not the case. It takes time, patience, money and curiosity to build your skills and become a good personal trainer. More to become great. Many quit after being disillusioned.
What that means for clients is: the trainer you start with is unlikely to see you through your earliest goals. You will likely work with multiple trainers. You will definitely work with a few
who are just starting their own career journey in health and wellness.
We’re not saying that’s bad. Everyone has to start somewhere.
However, with each new trainer, usually, comes a small step back. Your new trainer needs to assess you. Build rapport. Often, it takes you back or at least slows momentum.
Sandbox trainers come well-seasoned and thoroughly vetted. Moreover, our personal trainers are also manual therapists in their own right. They’ve put time and money into their careers already. They know the grind and are committed to it. It’s a recipe for longevity.
We’re not saying you will always work with your initial trainer. Nope, not at all. But we are saying your odds of working with them long term are very good.
