Take it from a personal trainer, working out is a deep well!

Approx. Read time: 1 minute

On a simple level, it can just be a place with an elliptical where you can do your cardio. But if you pursue all that can be learned from the gym then you might wake up one day and find yourself Olympic lifting and on some weird paleo diet. I don’t know where you are on that spectrum but what I do know is that there is a direct relationship between fitness knowledge and likelihood to commit to a regular regime.

It’s like anything, the more you know about fixing a toilet, the more likely you are to fix your toilet…

So my question for you is, if you had to get better at this stuff then how are you going do so? Here’s your options:

  • Formal education (try taking a course, check out my friend Kevin’s company Darby Training Systems)
  • Less formal education (ex: Books, Blogs, Youtube videos. Be a bit careful with this one)
  • People watching gym goers that seem to know what they’re doing and trying the exercises their doing (try it at 50% intensity to make sure you don’t hurt yourself)
  • Start with the machines. Are they the best? no. Does it matter? no. Get to the gym, keep it simple and fun, you can build a repertoire of more beneficials exercises over time.
  • My personal favourite, Hiring a professional personal trainer *wink wink*
  • Do an audit of everyone you know and figure out who might be able to help you get more fit (they don’t necessarily have to be more fit than you, picking someone less fit would simply help with accountability)

Do 2 of the 6 and I guarantee you’ll see the results you’re looking for! I earnestly recommend picking steps 5 or 6 as at least one of your steps. The gym is a confusing and often scary place. But like most scary places, it’s always less scary with a buddy.

Can you think of a way to get healthier that I haven’t touched on? I’d love to hear it here
